This is Josephat paper making. He is profoundly deaf and has spina bifida. Having no hope of earning a wage to support himself he felt trapped. However, in 2003 Josephat applied for work at Neema Crafts and was taught how to make paper, quickly becoming very skilled, especially in making our famous ellie poo paper. Deaf people give each other sign names and Josephat’s was “hunchback" because of the curvature of his spine. However, after a short time at Neema Crafts Josephat was given a new name by his colleagues. Now his sign name means “he is able”.
You can read Josephat's story and how Neema Crafts has made a difference to his life here.
